The fluffiness of Pom-Pom Rug

Writer's picture: Dominika Dominika

What's a better way to start a day than to wake up all fresh from a good night sleep and to feel the softness and warmth of a cozy, fluffy wool balls underneath your feet, while you get out of your bed to face another beautiful day?

Exactly! It sounds amazing!

So here is a brief summary on how to experience that heavenly coziness of the fluffiest bed rug made out of pom-poms in your own bedroom!! I won't say NO to a little piece of heaven every morning I get out of bed!

The idea is to create a cute pom-pom rug that will be made out of different color yarn balls in a random pattern. I am quite aware of a numerous tutorials available online on how to do it, as I did watch one or too myself just to get and idea on where to start, and I decided to make quick post on my take on this!

It does seems easy, but you need some guidelines on the basics, as I learned myself in the process!!

SO, WHAT DO YOU NEED

Yarn - I chose yarn in 6 different colors (I used a slightly cheaper yarn - 100% acrylic, as this is my first attempt at making pom-pom rug and it did make sense not to overspend on the yarn quality. However, the type I used was actually great to work with and quite soft!)

In terms of the quantity, it depends on the desired size of the rug, as well as how thick you want your pom-poms to be.

NOTE: unfortunately, the fluffier the pom-poms are made, the more yarn is used. Hence, if you consider making something larger, be aware that it will require a lot of yarn!!!

For my rug (size approx. 400 x 700mm) I used 2 yarn balls of each color. It seems a lot of yarn for such a small rug, but it should give

you a rough idea on how much yarn to get.

Pom-Pom maker - As per one tutorial that I watched, you can apparently make one out of cardboard.

Word of advice - don't bother!!

Although it seems to be very handy to use cardboard (you always find some empty shoe boxes, or maybe it's just me ;)), but trust me, you will eventually get fed up with it, knowing that you can buy a proper plastic set with different sizes for abut 10 euro on Amazon or any local crafty shop. I would suspect it will be easier and quicker to work with!

Plus all pom-poms would have the right size!!

I followed the instructions for the carboard one (just to note that there are many methods, so maybe the one I picked is not the best HAHA).

It worked.. for first few balls, then the cardboard got softer and started to fall apart!

Rug felt backing - I used carpet felt underlay that I found in IKEA. However, I don't recommend it as the "mesh grid" is too dense and it is hard to pull the yarn through it. There are special rug-making felts with larger grid available at knitting supply shops that are more suitable.

"Lucky me" discovered proper rug felt backing and pom-pom maker in a local shop, where I bought my yarn. After I finished my rug....

That's why having a chat with someone who knows their stuff can come in handy if you do it prior to starting new project! You can learn a lot useful things ;)

Oh and just to mention scissors or paper cutting knife would be needed.

WHEN YOU GET ALL YOUR SUPPLIES

Before "rocking on" with pom-pom making, I would suggest to first stock up with snacks and get that tv show that's on your To Watch list and has a lot of episodes - but you haven't had enough time to binge watch it!

Let's be honest here, this is a time-consuming and boring process (you will get what I mean probably between 10-20 of same looking pom-pom), and based on my experience, you will need something to keep you going while you spool each pom-pom. . .

So, I started with visualizing my finished design - it is important to decide before proceeding with any works whether it's going to be a flat or bumpy rug as this will determine if you need different pom-pom sizes. If you decide to make your own cardboard template, have a look at online tutorials for different types / methods and pick one that seems the easiest for you. Again, I would just buy ready made makers (they usually come in a pack of different sizes).

The fun begins!

Using the cardboard method, I cut out 3 different width templates, so I can create that uneven texture. To create a right sized pom-pom (not too dense nor too lose) I followed the "try, adjust, and keep adjusting until achieving the desired effect" logic, and after a number of trials, I got an idea of yarn length required for each size. It's handy to record this measurements for future use! Unfortunately, I didn't and now I would have to start the whole process all over again... Sighhhh

So learn from my mistakes :)

Anyways, once you have your templates and lengths ready to go, there is nothing stopping you from getting cracking on pom-poms!! (Unless you have already consumed your snacks, then this is the time to pause and run to the shop for more supplies!!)

Keep making pom-poms until you either run out of the yarn, or have the desired quantity! Remember, you can always add more later, if you decided that you need more.

NOTE: When tying the yarn into a pom-pom, make sure that the finishing knot is tight and keeps the yarn together, otherwise the strands will fall out when it's too loose - something that I realized too late, when the rug was already assembled..

Also make sure that the knot strings are of sufficient length, so it can be tied up to the felt.

Lay the finished pom-poms on the floor in the desired pattern, otherwise you would end up improvising as I did, which is fine if you aim to have a random order.

Then, one buy one, tie each pom-pom to the backing felt.

Eventually you will reach the final pom-pom and the rug is ready!! All that is left to do is to tidy up, by cutting off the excess of backing felt and yarn strings.

Just to mention I did run out of yarn what you can see on above picture. I never got around to pick up more as I learned that I tied the pom-poms too loose and the strings started falling out...

(The truth is I got so fed up with my cardboard pieces that I decided that I am happy enough with my small rug and it is time to move on onto something else.. at least until I buy plastic pom-pom maker!! But don't tell anyone..)

In addition to that, my adopted pet rats found this extremely cozy and while trying to settle in and arrange a nest for themselves, they kept pulling the yarn out of pom-poms.. And that was the end of the rug - it permanently became a home for my little pets. Meet Misha and Pisha chilling out among the pom-poms.. I consider this as a form of approval from my rats, meaning that the rug itself was in fact the coziest and the softest spot in my flat (they like cozy and soft fabrics:))

I hope you enjoy your pom-pom rug as much as my rats do!!

Talk later!!
